💨 I'd like to make a radio show
Goooood morning, Train Songz...

I want to make a radio show. Not a podcast. A radio show. Mostly music. Some talking. Maybe guests call in. But it's mostly about music. If you know about internet radio, I'd love to talk to you. I have some questions at the bottom. Before we get into that, let me ramble.

I want to do radio — once again, not a podcast, this is mostly about curating music and something we're all listening to live or on-demand — slowly at first, and then eventually daily. I am drawn to the idea because I want a daily product for Train Songz and radio is very much in our spirit of delivering you something that does not rely on algorithms in terms of discovery or taste-making.

Going live for thirty minutes or an hour a day to curate a playlist and be a part of your day would be fun for me, and Train Songz has gotten this far by mostly answering the question: "What would be fun to do?" (Choosing to stuff 2,000 envelopes in a weekend might be "type two fun," but fun in its own way nonetheless.)

Doing this radio thing every weekday would also force me to make time for Train Songz and get into that mindset on a recurring basis, which will ultimately help the zine. I want to make a bet on Train Songz, step back from a few clients, and free up actual time to do this and see if it's viable while I have no other dependents but myself. No time like the present!!!

In terms of a BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE — fans of of the show know that Train Songz is a nothing but a delicious cash grab — I also know that a daily radio show could be attractive to BIG-DOLLAR ADVERTISERS like nugs or instrument companies or festivals or whatever who could potentially value Train Songz's audience and pay enough sponsorship money for me to actually one day potentially possibly quit my day job and keep the price of the zine accessible!!!

My questions for you as I'm thinking about this:

  1. What equipment do I need to buy? I have a decent microphone. I imagine I might want some kind of sound effects board, so I can press a button and make a train whistle or whatever. Anything else?
  2. What service for internet radio should I use? I don't need video, because playing music gets a lot more expensive and complicated when you add video because of sync licensing. We're also intentionally pretty faceless around here, and no one person needs to be the "face" of Train Songz.
  3. What music-based internet, satellite, or terrestrial radio shows are part of your routine?
  4. What else am I not asking that I should be asking?

Anyway that's all. Daydreaming before I start a twelve-hour workday doing not Train Songz stuff. Issue #9 is damn near ready. Talk soon!
